Climb the Canyon 2007 Road Tour
and
Palo Duro X-treme 2007

Presented by Team Kure www.teamkure.org and benefiting LIVESTRONG, The Lance Armstrong Foundation.

October 13 & 14, 2007

Palo Duro Canyon State Park. www.palodurocanyon.com

October 13, 2007 Day One

Climb the Canyon 2007 Road Cycling Tour
Participants have the choice of 2 courses each with 3 ride options:

1.	Family/Fun Ride, a 12mile loop inside the canyon. The loop will start at the Amphitheatre Overflow Parking Area on the canyon floor and wind through the park road system and back again to the Amphitheatre Overflow Parking Area. This is a great ride and suitable for most anyone and will start at 8:15am. Participants can choose to make 2 laps (24 miles), 3 laps (36 miles), or 5 laps (60 miles).
2.	Climb the Canyon, a 16 mile loop that starts at the entry gate of the state park and descends from the canyon rim to the canyon floor some 800 feet below via the park road system and then passing the amphitheatre and around the Equestrian Loop and returning to the entry gate after making the climb from the canyon floor to the rim. Yes, this ride is challenging for sure but certainly worth the effort, with the ride starting at 8:00am. Participants can choose from 2 laps (32 miles), 3 Laps (48 miles), or 5 laps (80 Miles).

This is a SAG supported event, with 3 rest stops covering the course. Bike mechanics will be on hand to assist with quick tune-ups, flats, etc. Camping is permitted in the park; both primitive and RV spots are available. The park also has a few cabins that can be reserved for your visit.

October 14, 2007 Day Two

Palo Duro X-treme
This is an X-treme race comprised of three different events at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. We have designed this race to be fun yet challenging for everyone. The following events will run consecutively, when someone finishes one event they will immediately start the next event. The first participant to successfully complete all three events in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner. There will be prizes for First, Second, and Third place finishers.

1.	A mountain bike ride that will start at the Juniper Day use area and will continue in a loop that will end at the Lighthouse Trailhead; where you can drop your bikes and change to your running gear for the trail run.
2.	A Trail Run through the Park’s trail system. This route will twist and turn throughout Palo Duro Canyon, revealing some of the Texas Panhandle’s most beautiful scenery. Portions of the trail will be steep inclines and drops and sure to challenge anyone.
3.	An orienteering course. Participants will be given a map and coordinates for their starting point and to their first checkpoint. The course consists of 4 orienteering lanes each with 5 checkpoints. Once the first checkpoint is found, the participant will be given the coordinates to their next checkpoint and so forth. The object, find all 5 checkpoints and return to the starting point in the quickest time possible. The participants must provide their own Compass to plot, navigate, and locate their checkpoints. NO GPS UNITS WILL BE ALLOWED. Roads and trials may only be used as reference points and cannot be traveled, except after the final checkpoint has been reached. Participants may utilize the roads and/or trails only from the final checkpoint to return to the starting point.

Weather
If you do not like the weather in the Texas panhandle, give it a few minutes and it is sure to change. We have quite a bit of unpredictable weather so be prepared for anything. It could be hot and sunny this morning and cold and raining in the afternoon…The one constant we have is wind almost without exception the wind never ceases and frequently we have wind advisories, gust upwards for 60 miles per hour are not uncommon. In Palo Duro Canyon the wind can swirl and whip through areas of the canyon…bring eye protection; make sure that your tent and supplies are anchored securely. The temperatures during this time of the tear are generally mild…warm in the day with cool night. Be prepared though as we can still have a heat wave or a cold front this time of the year, if you are lucky you may experience both in the same day…

Accommodations

The Palo Duro State Park has Cabins, RV Campsites, and Primitive Camping site available. The park has set aside the Juniper Day Use Area for us to both Headquarter from and to camp, this area is open for those who wish to camp overnight or the weekend. There are several locations in the state park for shower and restroom facilities. Reservations and rates can be checked through the state park.
The two closest towns and Canyon, TX 12 miles to the east and Amarillo, TX approx 24 miles to the northwest. Canyon is the smaller of the two and home of WTAMU and hotel selection is limited, I would recommend that everyone eat at Wrongway Feldman’s Restaurant, a local landmark, at some point during their visit. Amarillo has plenty of hotel accommodations and quite a few great restaurants such as Leal’s Mexican Restaurant, Macaroni Joe’s, and Outback to name a few.

Vendors
We encourage providers of outdoor goods and supplies come out for the weekend to display new products and sell their wares. Space is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. This is an awesome opportunity to visit first hand with companies and athletes. There are several opportunities for companies to become involved by sponsoring meals, activities, demonstrations, and entertainment. Vendors can register by contacting Louis Breckenridge at louis@kayak4akure.com, 806-678-3762 or John Dubina at john@kayak4akure.com, 806-223-3914.

Entry Fees

Climb the Canyon $30.00 before September 15, 2007 and an additional $10.00 after this date. Each participant also agrees to raise an additional minimum donation of $150.00

Fundraising ideas can be found on our website and will be included in an email to registrants.

Palo Duro X-treme, $40.00 for solo competitors and $300.00 for three man teams. Each participant also agrees to raise an additional minimum donation of $150.00 with a three-man team pledging to raise a minimum of $450.00 in donations

Fundraising ideas can be found on our website and will be included in an email to registrants.

Why Donations?

The purpose behind events like this is to raise money for Children’s Cancer Research, Livestrong (The Lance Armstrong Foundation), and outdoor programs for disadvantaged youth. The money you help us raise turns into a miracle in someone else’s life. We need your support.
